Trapped: Movie Discussion

trapped-movie-smallIn this 20-minute short film (“Trapped“), Laura finds herself in an unplanned pregnancy, facing a life-changing decision. Overwhelmed by the enormity of her circumstances, she feels trapped. Abortion, parenting, adoption … none of the options sound good to her. Follow Laura’s journey as she finds help and hope at a pregnancy center in her community.

Please note: This short film includes images of Plan B and commentary on abortion. We encourage group (faculty) advisors to review the film before showing it to ensure that you are comfortable watching this with your teens.

Movie Discussion

It is helpful to print out questions to guide your discussion. You may pick questions from this list or create your own. You may want to write comments down on a chalk board, or simply talk it out.

First, talk about what you saw in the movie:

  • What are Laura’s first reactions?
  • What questions is Laura asking herself? What are her thoughts about this pregnancy?
  • What was her life like before her pregnancy?
  • What does Laura think will happen to her future?
  • How does she feel about telling her parents and her boyfriend?
  • How does her family react? (e.g. her dad, her mom)
  • What do we learn about Laura’s mom?
  • What options does she consider?
  • What is the boyfriend’s reaction when Laura tells him?
  • Where does Laura go for pregnancy help?
  • How does Laura’s boyfriend react when he sees the ultrasound?
  • What changes Laura’s mind?

Next, talk about how this story could have been different:

  • What other relationship choices could Laura and her boyfriend have made to have prevented this situation?  (e.g. abstinence, public dates, accountability)
  • How could Laura’s friend have encouraged life-affirming options or adult help? (Referring to: The friend who bought Plan B)
  • How could Laura’s family better supported her? What reaction would have been more helpful?
  • What if Laura made a different choice (e.g. adoption, abortion)?

Finally, let’s talk about what we can do here in our school:

  • How can choices in your relationship affect your future?
  • How can we encourage guys and girls to treat each other with respect, love, and compassion?
  • What would you say to a friend who is pregnant?
  • Who could you direct a pregnant friend to for life-affirming support?

Local Support

It’s helpful to prepare information about local pregnancy support where pregnant students can go to for help. You can look up your local pregnancy resource center(s) here: www.standingwithyou.org. With this information, you can:

  • Tell the group about the local pregnancy resource center.
  • Talk about what free and confidential services they provide.
  • Discuss ways that you can advertise this center so that other students know that they can go there for help.
