We have arrived at the 2024 fall semester! What a whirlwind these final weeks approaching Labor Day bring for all students, particularly full-time parents enrolled in school. It is an all-consuming, exciting, difficult, and rewarding season of life that feels long but passes quickly. To help you reap the rewards of parenthood for you and your family, enjoy these four tips to encourage and motivate you to begin your semester off on the right foot.
Time is on your side!
Time is your friend, even though it feels as though it’s working against you. Time management can be difficult when caring for a baby or toddler, which often throws your schedule off. But the key is to set the bar low and expect to be derailed. Things will take longer than anticipated, but take a deep breath – it will get done. Plan for the toddler to pee their pants and the baby to have a blow out on the way to day care or class, so you always leave 10 minutes earlier than “needed.” You will save yourself from panic mode and decrease stress.
And secondly, there are so many resources to maximize your time like audio books, dictation apps so you don’t have to type, and proof-reading add-ons for your computer.
Make a choice to love the new routine
Ultimately, we choose the way we react to situations. Tight and congested routines can quickly become old and laborious. Make that choice to associate it with positive feelings and actions. This one gets easier with practice. Practice reframing your thoughts when you want to spiral. “This is exhausting, and she won’t stop crying, I just want to scream!” can quickly change to taking a few deep breaths and saying instead, “I hear you sweetie. Being in the car seat in hard, but I am always here with you, I love you.” This can be easier said than done, but every lack of motivation or tantrum is an opportunity to practice.
Fuel Yourself
Simply put, don’t forget to eat! Especially for breastfeeding and pregnant moms, it’s common to have insulin resistance during this time. To prevent rage, depression, and blood sugar crashes, eat plenty of protein. Aldi and Lidl are affordable stores with loads of pre-made meals high in protein and healthier ingredients.
Gratitude
Your children are a gift, and any form of education is a special opportunity to grow. This is a season to daily reflect on how good things require hard work. And know that we are grateful for you, for choosing to continue learning, for being a committed parent, and contributing to your local community! We are always Standing With You.
