Peer Support

Students for Life at FIU: they are an official Students for Life group who are ready to support any pregnant and parenting student by connecting them to both school and community resources. They provide meals for pregnant and parenting students, baby showers, transportation to resource centers and doctor’s appointments, and help coordinate with departments on campus to advocate for resources, rights, and accommodations of pregnant and parenting students.

Resources

Health Center: Offers free consultations and referrals, and low-cost pregnancy tests and women’s health services.

Counseling Center: Offers free individual and couples counseling to FIU students

Diaper Changing Stations: Located in the Graham Center and Parking Garage 5 (family restrooms, men’s and women’s restrooms)

Lactation Rooms Available– there are five locations on campus. Request a room here

Family Housing Available: FIU now offers family housing in university apartments. Family housing is available to a student and spouse, student and child, or student, spouse, and child.

On-Campus Childcare Available: The Center is open to children ages 2-5 years of FIU students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the neighboring community, and also accepts VPK vouchers towards tuition costs.

On-Campus Food Pantry: There are two pantry locations on campus available to students that provides non-perishable food items, including canned proteins, fruits, dairy, vegetables, and soups, along with grains, oils and condiments, and toiletry items.

Pregnant and parenting Panthers have the right to be free from discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, and related conditions, including lactation. FIU will provide reasonable modifications unless doing so would impose an undue hardship or fundamentally alter the nature of a program or activity. Adverse actions against employees for requesting or using this process are strictly prohibited.

Requests for reasonable modifications related to pregnancy, pregnancy-related conditions, and/or childbirth should be filed with the Office of Title IX and Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance (TITLEIX). The TITLEIX office is responsible for administering the reasonable modification request review process. Some requests also may be reviewed under applicable disability accommodations processes pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Modifications may be applied within one year following the birth of a child.

Reasonable modifications vary based on individual circumstances but may include flexible work schedule, lactation breaks, parking modifications, or job assignment extensions.
