The Lamar Cardinals for Life aims to support pregnant and parenting students by advocating for their on-campus rights, providing resources and material support to women and mothers, and donating to local pregnancy and women’s centers.

Campus Resources

Health Center: Pregnancy Tests and Referrals Offered

Counseling Center: offers confidential therapy to all currently enrolled Lamar University and LIT students for $10 per session.

Diaper Changing Station Available– located in Student Center

Lactation/Quite Room Available– Located on first floor of the Setzer Student Center, Room 173

On-campus Food Pantry: The Cardinals Food Pantry is a free and anonymous food pantry for LU students.

Scholarships Available: explore hundreds of scholarship opportunities across a variety of majors and backgrounds, including scholarships for single, parenting, and pregnant students.

Online Education Available

Priority Registration: effective September 1, 2023, higher education institutions offering early registration for students will also provide priority registration for parenting students. A parenting student is classified as follows: a student enrolled at Lamar University who is a parent/legal guardian of a child under the age of 18. Campus Policies & Accommodations

Pregnant & Parenting Policy

Lamar University is committed to providing a welcoming learning environment for pregnant and parenting students through policies that protect academic rights guaranteed to these students under federal and state law.

Lamar University’s Title IX Office provides information and supportive assistance to pregnant students, including assistance obtaining a pregnancy-related accommodation or requesting a leave of absence.

Lamar University’s liaison officer for parenting students provides information regarding support services and other resources available to parenting students. Students seeking such information or requesting a leave of absence related to parenting should contact the parenting student liaison.

Accommodations

Lamar University shall, for reasons related to a student’s pregnancy, childbirth, or any resulting medical status or condition:

1. excuse the student’s absence;
2. allow the student to make up missed assignments or assessments;
3. allow the student additional time to complete assignments in the same manner as the
   institution allows for a student with a temporary medical condition; and
4. provide the student with access to instructional materials and video recordings of lectures for
   classes for which the student has an excused absence under this section to the same extent that
   instructional materials and video recordings of lectures are made available to any other student
   with an excused absence.

Lamar University shall provide reasonable accommodations to a pregnant student, including accommodations that:

1. would be provided to a student with a temporary medical condition; or
2. are related to the health and safety of the student and the student’s unborn child, such as
   allowing the student to maintain a safe distance from substances, areas, and activities known to
   be hazardous to pregnant women or unborn children.
