Pregnant and Parenting Student Resources and Referrals
University Ministry: Campus Ministry welcomes the opportunity to be of assistance to pregnant students who will meet with trained pastoral ministers in a caring, supportive, and non-judgmental environment to consider the spiritual dimensions.
Pregnant & Parenting Housing: Pregnant students are able to and encouraged to continue to live in the residence halls. Depending on availability and need, a private room with bathroom may be provided to a pregnant student. USF does not allow infants or children to live on campus with their parents. Housing staff will assist parenting students in securing housing off campus.
Financial Assistance: Pregnant and parenting students will be connected with the Financial Aid office to determine if they are eligible for additional financial aid and adjust their financial aid package, as students are eligible and resources are available.
Campus Policies & Accommodations
As a Catholic Jesuit University, USF celebrates human life as a gift and thus we are dedicated to offering any student who is faced with the issues of pregnancy a supportive environment that is caring, compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental.
The University will strive to offer support and services to our pregnant students to the best of our ability; addressing issues such as classes, housing, financial assistance, health care, as well as personal and spiritual counseling both during and after a pregnancy. If you are pregnant, or if you know someone who is pregnant, the following resources are available at USF and in our local community. We encourage you to contact any of the individuals or offices listed below.
Title IX protects pregnant and parenting students from discrimination from participating in their educational activities (academic and co-curricular).
Title IX protections include:
- Excusing absences that are medically necessary related to the pregnancy/childbirth and allowing students to make up any missed work.
- Permitting extra breaks, or longer breaks, for lactation needs as well as access to lactation spaces.
- Not forcing a student to take a leave of absence or not take a leave of absence.
- If the student needs alternative furniture for accommodating their pregnancy needs, provide a table instead of a desk, a different chair, etc.
- Providing alternative options for success in a course where medically necessary conditions related to pregnancy/childbirth – similar to a student with a temporary disability. This would be accommodated by Student Disability Services.
For students, please complete this accommodations form or contact the Office of Title IX at [email protected]
